Pediatric Dentistry

Who is a pediatric dentist?

Pediatric dentists specialize in the oral health of children from birth to adolescence. They have the training and knowledge to look after a child’s teeth, gums, and mouth at all stages of development.

During the first six months of life, children begin to get their baby teeth. They begin to lose their initial set of teeth at the age of 6 or 7 years, which are subsequently replaced by secondary, permanent teeth. Children who do not receive sufficient dental care risk developing oral decay and illness, which can lead to a lifetime of pain and consequences. Early childhood dental caries an infectious condition, now affects 5 times as many children as asthma and 7 times as many children as hay fever.

When should I bring my child in for his or her first appointment?

Your child should have his or her first dental visit six months following the eruption of their first tooth, or by their first birthday, whichever comes first, according to the American Dental Association.

During the initial visit, what happens?

The initial visit is to get to know you and your child, as well as for us to get to know your child. This is often a brief visit. It allows us to offer you with information about your child’s dental treatment as well as to answer any questions you may have. We can also look inside the mouth to see what’s going on with the teeth. We may also give you materials on how to care for developing teeth and keep your child’s mouth healthy at the end of your visit.

How Often Does My Child Need to Visit the Dentist?

Your child/children just like an adult, should be examined every six months. We may propose more frequent visits depending on your child’s individual requirements. The purpose of the initial visits is to continue to assist your child adjust to our office. Then we start cleaning and examining their teeth. We demonstrate the tools we use and explain what we do with them before we use them, allowing your child to get familiar with our procedures.

How Can I Assist My Child in Taking Care of Their Teeth?

Oral hygiene begins even before the first tooth emerges. You can clean your child’s gums with a damp washcloth after breast feedings before they obtain their first teeth. Brushing can begin after the teeth begin to appear. Select a toothbrush with a tiny head and gentle bristles. You should use toothpaste, but not fluoridated products before the age of 2.
